Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain calls from the official, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
